Some 530 families remain to be relocated from Chernobyl-affected areas, official says 11:09, 21/04/2005
Some 530 families remain to be relocated from Chernobyl-affected areas of the Gomel and Mogilyov regions, Vladimir Kudin, a departmental head with the Chernobyl Committee under the Council of Ministers, told reporters in Minsk on Tuesday.
He said that the families were expected to receive new homes in the coming two years.
Other households that were to be relocated from affected areas have already moved into new homes, he said.
The official noted that the remaining 530 families had applied for new homes that they are eligible for only in 1998 and 1999.
A total of 137,000 people have been evacuated from contaminated areas over the 19 years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, according to him.
Last year the government built 213 apartments for families from affected areas and people disabled as a result of the accident and an additional 108 apartments for those involved in work vital to life in affected areas, he said.
