Lithuanian foreign ministry denies report that man who allegedly smuggled cash for Skrebets was Lithuanian citizen 11:27, 21/04/2005
An official with the Lithuanian foreign ministry rejected the allegation that a man recently detained in Belarus for illegally bringing $200,000 in cash to the country was a citizen of Lithuania.
The official, who asked not to be named, told BelaPAN on Wednesday that the detainee was not a citizen of Lithuania, nor did he have a visa to visit Lithuania.
On the night of April 17, Belarusian Television`s "The Center of Attention" show reported that Belarus` law-enforcement agencies had seized a Lithuanian citizen who had delivered $200,000 to finance the political activities of former House of Representatives member Sergei Skrebets. The report included video footage of the man, but his face was obscured and his voice was distorted. The man said in the show that he had received the money in Vilnius and delivered it to Minsk with all precautions.
According to the source at the Lithuanian foreign ministry, Vilnius regards the Belarusian authorities`s move as a frame-up against not only Belarus` opposition forces but also Lithuania. She also said that the ministry had not yet received any reply to its official inquiry in connection with the incident.
