GUUAM leaders criticize political situation in Belarus 10:43, 25/04/2005
The leaders of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Uzbekistan, the countries forming a bloc called GUUAM, strongly denounced the political situation in Belarus at a summit in Cishinau, Moldova, on April 22.
“President Lukashenko is moving faster and faster to autocracy and self-isolation of the Belarusian state and the Belarusian country,” Russian news outlets quoted Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus, who attended the meeting as a guest, as saying.
The meeting was also attended by Romanian President Traian Basescu and Jan Kubis, secretary general of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said that the Cishinau summit was “of great importance for building democracy from the Baltic to Black Sea.”
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said the summit should trigger “a third wave of revolutions that will sweep the rest of Europe.”
