Policemen Lost Andrei Klimov’s Passport. Politician Kept Out Of Prison 16:50, 25/04/2005
During the detention the passport of the MP of the Supreme Soviet of the 13th convocation Andrei Klimov was lost, told the assistant of Andrei Klimov, Timofey Dranchuk to the press center of the Charter’97. The politician according to the ruling of the city prosecutor’s office is to spend the nest week behind the bars, but he cannot be placed to the detention facility of the Minsk executive committee Interior Affairs department without an ID. Besides, it has turned out that he had spent the last three days in the isolation detention center illegally.
Now the politician is kept in the ward of the police department of the Tsentralny district of Minsk. It is an infringement of the law as well, as there are no conditions for sleeping and having a meal in the ward. The absurd situation is being solved by police leadership now.
Members of A. Klimov’s team call his arrest illegal and believe that he is to be released with written undertaking not to leave the place.
“To my mind, Klimov should be released but restricted to Minsk. By the way, this had already been done after a criminal action had been brought up against him for libelling Lukashenka,” Timofey Dranchuk said. “All these events could be viewed as regime’s exceptional fear of people who are not afraid to express their views and say the truth about the criminal regime. I am sure that Klimov’s arrest is directly connected with the recent statement of Condoleezza Rice about the US attitude towards Belarus, and the recent session of the GUAM group (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova), where Georgian president Saakashvili stated support of the democratic forces of Belarus. Lukashenka feels that he is pushed into a corner”.
On April 22 Andrei Klimov was arrested and taken to the investigation committee of the Interior Affairs Department of Minsk executive committee. He was detained for organizing an action on March 25 in Minsk and called “Belarusian revolution”. A criminal action has been brought up against A.Klimov for violation of the Article 342 of the Criminal Code (organizing group actions violating public order, or active participation in them). He was charged with “organizing and active participation in group actions, gross violation of public order accompanied by obvious insubordination to lawful demands that caused disruption of public transport functioning and public institutions work).
As we have informed, Klimov is also accused of libeling the president (Article 367 Part 2 of the Criminal Code) and insulting the president (Article 368 Part 1 of the Criminal Code), because of his statements concerning Aliaksandr Lukashenka in different articles and books. The court session which was to take place on May 19 is rescheduled because of Klimov’s failure to appear in court.
