Aleksandr Voitovich announces intention to run for presidency 10:58, 25/04/2005
Aleksandr Voitovich, former president of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences (1997-2000) who chaired the Council of the Republic (upper chamber of the National Assembly) between 2000 and 2003, told BelaPAN that he intended to run in the country`s 2006 presidential election.
According to the 67-year-old Voitovich, there were several factors that prompted his decision to contend for the presidency. "Firstly, this is the state of affairs in all spheres of the country`s life, which are increasingly affected by Aleksandr Lukashenko`s dictatorship," he said. "Secondly, I receive a lot of appeals from representatives of various groups of our society. And thirdly, I have experience of service at different levels with many organizations, including national ones."
Dr. Voitovich noted that this experience and knowledge would help him properly perform the functions of the head of state.
He pointed out that he was holding all necessary consultations regarding his participation in the forthcoming presidential campaign, including consultations with political parties.
