Lukashenko will not be invited to Council of Europe summit in Warsaw, PACE president says 12:15, 26/04/2005
Strasbourg, 25 April. Aleksandr Lukashenko will not be invited to the Council of Europe`s summit scheduled to take place in Warsaw on May 16 and 17, said the Dutch president of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE), Rene van der Linden, at a news conference on Monday.
It is impossible to invite the Belarusian leader, as that country is not a member of the Council of Europe, Mr. van der Linden noted. He spoke for supporting Belarus` pro-democratic forces and called on the country to end its political self-isolation.
He expressed concern about the current developments in Belarus and hope for a new situation without which he said it is impossible to resume contact with Belarus.
On April 28, the PACE subcommittee on Belarus is to hold a hearing on the case of Mikhail Marinich. The imprisoned Belarusian opposition politician`s son, Pavel, is expected to attend the hearing.
