German Youth Supports Belarusian Students :: Charter'97 :: News

On May 2-4 in the university of the city of Konstantz (Germany) an informational action timed to the 19th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster took place. For three days Belarusian, Ukrainian, Russian and German students told the lecturers and students of the university about Belarus, its history, culture and current political situation, as well as about Chernobyl accident afthermaths for the population of Belarus.

Every day in the central hall of the university a multi-media presentation was demonstrated. Besides, signatures were collected in support of the students of the European Humanities University and of the Yakub Kolas Lyceum, closed by the Belarusian regime for political reasons. More than 800 signatures of students and professors of the university against closure of educational institutions, prosecution and arrests of Belarusian students for personal opinion and political dissent, have been collected. The petition is to be sent to the Education ministry of Belarus. German students were indignant by the shameless violation of the fundamental human rights for receiving education, freedom of thought and opinion, and their free expression.

On May 3 the discussion evening was held with the participation of the students of the university. The chairman of the German-Belarusian Society (www.dbg-online.org ), professor of the Konstantz Reiner Lindner delivered a report on situation in Belarus.
In the framework of this event a 30-minute internet videoconference with Belarus was held. German students had a possibility to talk to young people from Belarus via videoconference.
