More bidders seek democratic forces’ presidential nomination 11:37, 19/05/2005
Eight bidders for the presidency in Belarus’ 2006 election agreed on May 18 to work together toward the selection of a single democratic candidate, Anatoly Lebedko, leader of the United Civic Party (UCP), told BelaPAN.
Apart from Mr. Lebedko taking part in the talks were Sergei Kalyakin, leader of the Belarusian Party of Communists; Social Democratic politician Nikolai Statkevich; pro-democracy activist Aleksandr Milinkevich; Aleksandr Yaroshuk, chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions; Vladimir Kolos, a prominent public figure; and Aleksandr Voitovich, former chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly.
Stanislav Shushkevich, chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic Hramada, is also involved in the selection process although he did not attend the meeting, Mr. Lebedko said.
He added that the organizers would like to draw former MP Valery Frolov and former Agriculture Minister Vasily Leonov in the nomination process.
The bidders intend to propose improvements to selection procedures this month. They need to agree on the number of supporters to be delegated by each party or candidate to a National Congress of Democratic Forces that will choose a single candidate.
The congress is to be held before October 1, Mr. Lebedko said.
