Polish foreign minister bans visits to Poland by selected Belarusians 11:40, 19/05/2005
Persons who took part in recent actions aimed against the Union of Poles in Belarus (ZPB) will be banned from entering Poland and other EU countries, Foreign Minister Adam Daniel Rotfeld said Tuesday [17 May]. "We deem it just and honest that those who violate the law bear responsibility" for their actions, Rotfeld told PAP.
Last week the Belarusian Justice Ministry declared not valid the 6th ZPB congress held last March. The congress elected new authorities.
Rotfeld explained that Poland wanted to add a few names to the existing EU list of persons banned from entering the Union. There are several Belarusians on the list already.
Rotfeld emphasized that Poland differentiated between the Belarusian society and Belarusian state authorities. The former was well disposed towards Poland and the Poles, he noted.
Relations between the Polish and Belarusian societies and between the Belarusian opposition and the Poles were "ideal", the minister assured. Therefore it is the intention of the Polish side that future restrictions apply to concrete persons only.
