Union of Belarusian Poles welcomes Poland’s blacklist of Belarusian citizens, spokesman says 11:13, 24/05/2005
The new leadership of the Union of Belarusian Poles (UBP) has welcomed as "fair" Poland`s list of Belarusian citizens barred from entering the country.
The list, which was compiled by the Polish foreign ministry amid a bitter diplomatic row between Warsaw and Minsk, was published by the Polish daily Zycie Warszawy last week.
It includes four former UBP leaders, as well as Justice Minister Viktor Golovanov, several KGB officers and officials with the Council of Minister’s Committee on Religious and National Affairs.
Warsaw accused Minsk of interfering in the activities of the UBP after the Belarusian justice ministry invalidated the Union’s March 12-13 convention that resulted in the election of new UPB leaders. The two countries moved on to expel each other’s diplomats.
UBP spokesman Andrzej Pisalnik told BelaPAN that the blacklist was “fair,” and that the inclusion of the former leaders in it had not come as a surprise to the Union.
The list is a sign that “some justice has prevailed in the end,” he added.
