Sixth Anniversary of Nyamiha Tragedy Marked Today
16:13, 30/05/2005

Six years ago, on May 30, 1999, tragic events took place in Minsk. An open-air show was organized on that day. Thousands of Minsk dwellers, mostly young, gathered for the show. A sudden shower caused panic among the crowd. The folks streamed into the near-by subway underpass of “Nyamiha” (“Nemiga”) subway station, which resulted in a bloody stampede leaving 53 people dead and some 250 injured. Attempts of the relatives of the killed ones to bring to accountability then city mayor and police officials turned out futile. Nor did the families of the victims manage to get compensation from the state. Families of stampede victims were stripped of privileges. On August 5, 1999 the court ruled to halt the case considerations. Two top police officers, Viktar Rusak, head of public security department of Minsk executive committee Internal Affairs department, and Uladzimer Kandratsin, former head of mass events department, were charged with criminal negligence. However, this criminal action was withdrawn on March 25, 2002 according to the statute of limitations. Nobody was called accountable for the tragedy.
