Zakharenka’s Case in European Court
12:09, 02/06/2005

German lawyers are finishing collection of materials concerning disappearances of Belarusian politicians, told to the BelaPAN agency the human rights activist Aleh Vouchak (Oleg Volchek), representative of the family of former Interior Minister Yury Zakharanka, disappeared under unclear circumstances in 1999.

As said by Aleh Vouchak, he had received a letter from the wife of the disappeared political, Volha Zakharanka, who lives in Germany now. In particular, she wrote that the problem of disappearances had been studied by German lawyers for almost a year, and now the preparation for taking the case to court of one of the European countries is underway.

The human rights activist believes that most likely the case is to be submitted to a German court. “It does not matter would it be Germany, Spain or the Netherlands. It is a technical moment, to which country’s court the case is to be submitted,” A. Vouchak said.

As said by him, German lawyers are to demand bringing up criminal proceedings against high-ranking Belarusian officials, who could be involved in abduction of Yury Zakharanka. “Not only lawyers, but politicians, public figures, journalists, foundations and entire organizations are working at the case of Yury Zakharanka. The case could be submitted to the court in the course of summer,” A. Vouchak stated.
