President of Belarus meets with prosecutor general to receive his report 11:02, 16/06/2005
At the same time the number of minor crimes has been on an increase, including personal thefts. Having studied the problem in Minsk oblast, the Office of Public Prosecutor came out with a set of measures on prompt detecting of these crimes, thorough investigating into these cases and on ensuring inevitability of punishment to the persons committing thefts. The Office of Public Prosecutor believes these measures would help reduce the number of thefts in the second half year.
Piotr Miklashevich also informed the president about the results of the work of the Office of Public Prosecutor aimed at combating corruption. For the five months this year the law enforcement bodies of the republic revealed 2242 crimes of this kind. The state suffered more than BYR 9 billion damage.
Several state officials were charged with embezzlement and accepting bribes.
The president of Belarus has underlined that the Office of Public Prosecutor is responsible for the well-organized and systematic work of all law enforcement bodies of the republic in implementing the anti-corruption policy. At the same time the Belarusian leader has noted that the Office of Public Prosecutor has not only to fight the consequences of corruption but also to timely eliminate prerequisites and conditions begetting these crimes. Not only the law enforcement but also state government bodies should be involved in this work.
The head of state has been informed about the activities of the law enforcement bodies on counteracting drug-related crimes.
Moreover, the Public Prosecutor has informed the Belarusian leader about the results of investigating criminal crimes which evoked a strong public response.
In particular, the Office of Public Prosecutor has completed an inquiry into a case against former chairman of the state aviation committee Fyodor Ivanov. His alleged abuse of power cost the state about BYR 2 billion. In the next future the case will be submitted to the court.
An inquiry into the criminal case against executives of the National Park Braslav Lakes continues. The inquiry has already revealed several cases of embezzlement, infringement of the environmental legislation and other violations.
Piotr Miklashevich reported about the results of the juridical procedure against former chairman of the Ivatsevichi regional executive committee Vitaliy Dmitranitsy. He was pleaded guilty to accepting a USD 23,000 bribe as well as to abusing power.
The president demanded the Office of Public Prosecutor timely tackle any case of corruption and bribery by the state officials. Moreover the Office of Public Prosecutor was authorized to take tougher measures on prevention of the aforementioned crimes.
