US observers make fly over military facilities of Russia, Belarus 11:01, 16/06/2005
US observers began on Wednesday inspection flyovers of military facilities of Russia and Belarus. A Russian Defence Ministry official told Itar-Tass that the “observation flights are carried out by specialists of the Pentagon within the framework of the Open Sky Treaty”.
The 2,000-kilometre route of the inspectors traverses strategic facilities.
The observers are using the modified military plane OS-135 with special video and photo equipment.
Russia and the US have agreed to make two-four flights a year over military facilities and areas of military exercises of each other.
Other signatories of the Open Sky Treaty limited themselves to one mutual inspection a year.
“Foreign observers have already made 12 inspections over Russia’s territory this year. Russian observers have carried out the same number of flyovers of military facilities of country members of the treaty,’ the ministry’s official said.
Russia uses for inspection the planes An-30B and Tu-154 MLK1.
The reconnaissance planes are equipped with optical and aerial photo equipment allowing the monitoring in any area of the world.
