Workers On Strike In Polatsk :: Charter'97 :: News

Today since morning the workers of the production and technological department of construction organization number 22 in Polatsk went on strike. They gathered in the building of the head office, demanding pay rise and improvement of working conditions.

As said by the workers, their wage is from 115 to 180 thousand Br a month. It is not enough even for basic necessities. They demanded higher pay from the administration many times, but in vain.

For recent years construction organization number 22, except for building industrial and dwelling buildings, is engaged in the special program of housing construction in villages. Cost price of construction of a house in a village is higher than the cost fixed by the state. So the construction organization has losses, and the wages of workers go down.

The workers were standing in a line for an hour, and after that the director of the department Leanid But-Husaim came out to them. He said that he understands their problems, but asked to start working. He promised that the administration of the construction organization is to come on Friday for negotiations. Builders started working, though they said that they would start indefinite strike in case of their demands’ non-fulfilment.
