Helsinki Rights Group Activists Deported From Uzbekistan for Investigating Andijan Revolt 11:04, 17/06/2005, MosNews
Uzbek authorities have deported four Helsinki Human Rights Group activists from Andijan, the Gazeta.ru website reported, citing the organization’s press release Thursday. The police detained the organization’s activists, nationals from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Russia, near Andijan late at night. Elisa Musaeva, the group’s secretary, was among those detained.
The four activists and their driver were kept for four hours and then deported from the country, the press release says.
The Helsinki group said its activists were investigating recent arrests of Uzbek human rights activists. The arrests followed the bloody outbreak in Andijan, where witnesses say 500 people, including women and children, died when troops put down a revolt on May 13.
The group’s executive manager Aaron Rhodes has addressed the Uzbek authorities asking them to allow human rights activists to continue their investigation, Gazeta.ru wrote.
