USA and EU Intend to Promote Democracy in Belarus
11:05, 21/06/2005

The USA and the EU stated that they intend to promote democracy in Belarus, and confirmed their solidarity with the advocates of democracy in Ukraine, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries of the world. “The European Union and the United States believe that the spread of accountable and representative government, the rule of law, and respect for human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are a strategic priority as well as a moral necessity,” reads the joint statement by the EU and the US, adopted at the summit USA-EU at the White House.

US President George Bush, President designate of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and the head of the European Commission and the High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the EU Javier Solana have taken part in the summit.

“We will in particular continue to coordinate our efforts to promote democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights in Belarus,” the document underlines.

“Recognizing that democratic reform is a process that deserves our support, we promise our solidarity and support to those promoting democracy around the world, be it in Ukraine, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, or elsewhere,” the statement reads.

The parties stressed that the EU and NATO had worked closely to create a Europe whole, free, and at peace. “Both the EU and NATO have played an important part in this, and continue to do so”.
