Siargey Skrabets’ lawyer: “His organism seems to be burning out…”
12:05, 22/06/2005

Siargey Skrabets has been hunger striking behind bars of the investigative isolation ward for 39 days already. The oppositionist, former deputy and the “Republic” group leader is protesting against his arrest and accusations charged against him which he regards groundless. The former Parliamentarian is charged on two articles of the Criminal Code - crime preparation and bribery.

Lawyer Mikhail Khomich told Radio Liberty that Siargey Skrabets only drinks ordinary water. Nevertheless, it may be seen basing on the lawyer’s words that the looks of the former Parliamentarian are going from bad to worse. “Today when we were talking I have noticed that he had lost much weight. It becomes known that his normal weight is approximately 98 kg, or even 100 kg. But know he weighs only 74 kg. The organism seems to be burning out,” - the lawyer said.

The lawyer also added that Siargey Skrabets had treated the fact that his case would be considered by the Republican Prosecutor’s Office, not the Brest Prosecutor’s Office, with great equanimity. The former deputy is sure that the rate of his sentence does not depend on employees of the prosecutor’s office of any level. The former deputy is positive that his case is that of the political essence, that is why the sentence will be set beyond the boundaries of the law-enforcement agencies.
