A public Russian-Belarusian commission by the President of Russian Federation’s Council for Assisting the Development of civil society institutions and human rights has been created. The commission is to work, inter alia, in the sphere of protection of human rights of Russian citizens in Belarus, and Belarusian citizens in Russia, to monitor human rights and freedom observation by authorities of Russia and Belarus, freedom of expression in mass media.

Open appeal to international democratic community of the European Union

We, undersigned, appeal to EU leaders, European Parliament members and to all representatives of European democratic forces! We appreciate the EU devotion to high democratic values in social system organization. We highly appreciate the efforts on maintaining principles of democracy, freedom and human rights in the whole world. 22 June 2005, 40 days have gone since armed suppression of peaceful rally in the town of Andijan, Uzbekistan. It resulted in hundreds of killed, wounded including children, women, aged people and unarmed men.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office prolonged the investigation term of the murder of the oppositional newspaper “Salidarnasts” journalist Veranika Charkasava till August 21, 2005, as Vice Attorney General of Belarus Viktar Prus has said today at a press conference. “An active operational investigative wok is being carried out. About 10 working versions are being examined. Unfortunately, a positive result has not been reached so far,” - he remarked.

Belarus president elected Eurasec council chairman

Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko has been elected chairman of the Interstate Council of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC) for next year, its current chairman, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, said after an extended session of the body today. Nazarbayev said the leaders of the Eurasec nations (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan, while Armenia, Moldova, and Ukraine have observer status) had agreed on further moves to step up their cooperation. Nazarbayev said trade within the Eurasec had grown by 40% to $28 billion in 2004. The Kazakh president said the Eurasec leaders had agreed that the organization was conducive to national economic growth.

Head of Russia-Belarus Union says Putin will become its president in 2006

Some points in PACE resolution unacceptable to Russia

Many points of the resolution on Russia’s fulfilling its obligations to the Council of Europe and amendments to the resolution have nothing to do with Russia’s obligations. It is deplorable that the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) supported on a number of questions the positions of those countries that took advantage of the debate in their narrow nationalistic aims, Konstantin Kosachev, the chairman of the Committee for International Relations of the State Duma, the head of the Russian delegation, thus commented to reporters on the resolution on Russia’s fulfilment of its obligations to the Council of Europe the PACE adopted on Wednesday. He made it plain that he meant the Georgian deputies and deputies of the Baltic countries who were persistent in toughening the criticism in the resolution and proposed three quarters of the number of amendments for the purpose.

Europe demands Russia to stop supporting Lukashenka

On Wednesday the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has adopted a resolution, urging the government of Russia to adjust the reforms carried out in the country and to speed up observing the of obligations that Russia undertook when it joined the Council of Europe. On proposal of the Georgian delegation, the demand not to provide “political and financial support to the government of Belarus” was included to the resolution, interconnecting this support with respect to human rights and civil freedoms of the Belarusian nation”. 91 delegates voted for the resolution, while 17 were against.
