Europe demands Russia to stop supporting Lukashenka 11:12, 23/06/2005
On Wednesday the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has adopted a resolution, urging the government of Russia to adjust the reforms carried out in the country and to speed up observing the of obligations that Russia undertook when it joined the Council of Europe. On proposal of the Georgian delegation, the demand not to provide “political and financial support to the government of Belarus” was included to the resolution, interconnecting this support with respect to human rights and civil freedoms of the Belarusian nation”. 91 delegates voted for the resolution, while 17 were against.
The assembly also supported the amendment of the representatives of the Baltic states, which in fact includes indirect statement of the fact of occupation of the Baltic states by the Soviet Union. The amendment has been made to the text of the resolution about “compensation to persons previously deported from occupied Baltic states, and to their ancestors…Assembly calls upon Russian authorities to settle these questions as soon as possible”.
