TheValery Levaneuski can be transferred to Minsk prison hospital :: Charter'97 :: News

The family of Belarusian political prisoner Valery Levaneuski received a letter from the entrepreneurs’ leader where he said that in the nearest time, probably, June 29, he might be transferred to the republican prison hospital in Minsk.

At present the leader of the All-National Strike Committee of Entrepreneurs, member of the Civil Initiatives Council “Svabodnaya Belarus” is kept in the medical unit of the Ivatsevichy reformatory. The political prisoner suffers from heartache. Levaneuski hunger stroke for two weeks demanding the dismissal of Uladzimir Kauchur, the Head of the Penalty Executions Committee of the Belarussian Home Ministry. The entrepreneur deems it is due to the orders of this official that his claims and applications are not considered in the order fixed by the law, and many of them are not considered at all.

It is also said in the letter that the political prisoner has received recently a new penalty - for “non-observance of the form of outfit”. Nevertheless, as Valery Levaneuski remarks in the letter, “such breaches are possible in the army, but not in the jail.”

Chairman of National strike committee of entrepreneurs, member of Council of civil initiatives “Free Belarus” Valery Levaneusky and depute of Chairman of National strike committee of entrepreneurs Aliaksandr Vasilieu were sentenced by Leninsky district court of Hrodna to two years of imprisonment. The court found them guilty in public insult to president of Belarus connected with accusation of another grave crime (article 368.2 of Criminal code). The sentence says that phrase “Go and say that you are against someone going on skiing to Austria and living in grand stile on your money” published in leaflet contains insult of Aliaksandr Lukashenka. Aliaksandr Vasilieu was also found guilty in organizing mass protest action on May 1, 2004 in Hrodna.
