New Attorney’s General report of celebrated cases
17:02, 24/06/2005, Aleg Gruz’dzilovich, Radio Liberty

Zmitser Zavadski’s case again is being investigated, and the question of possible amnesty for Halina Zhuraukova remains closed, as Attorney General Piotar Miklashevich said.

Piotar Miklashevich could not say anything definite concerning the official of high rank, accused former Head of the Property Management Department of the President Halina Zhuraukova; Piotar Miklashevich neither confirmed nor refuted the information about the amnesty granted to her by Aliaxandar Lukashenka. In February Zhuraukova was sentenced to 4-year confinement, but she never appeared in the reformatory.

Attorney General re-addressed several questions concerning celebrated criminal cases to his assistants. Barys Tarletski received the question about the case of disappeared journalist of the ORT TV channel Zmitser Zavadski that has been reopened recently. “Investigatory and operative groups are working, are undertaking their measures; there has been a foreign official business tip lately. In short, there is certain material to finish this case,” - Taletski said.

We shall remind that the case of ORT operator of Zmitser Zavadski, about which journalists asked Piotar Miklashevich, has been investigated for 5 years already and has been dismissed twice within this time. This year the case has been reopened once again, after it had been stated in the Council of Europe about the reluctance of the Belarusian powers to investigate the cases of the disappeared opponents to the regime. On the occasion of the reopening of the case, Zavadski’s mother Volga and his wife Sviatlana said they did not trust the investigators since they do not consider them independent in their activity.
