All-Belarusian People’s Meeting as political scenery 17:00, 24/06/2005
As it has been announced recently, the preparations for the third All-Belarusian people’s meeting have been launched. The All-Belarusian meeting is a unique phenomenon that does not has its analogues in the other CIS countries (except from Turkmenistan). The powers will once again “report to the people” in the classic tradition of the soviet congresses of people’s deputies. Aliaxandar Lukashenka will tell about the work done within the last 5 years, about tremendous success of the Belarusian economic model, about the vicious schemes of foreign enemies and their Belarusian hirelings, “Narodnaya Volia” writes.
Operetta-like in form and senseless in content - this is the characteristic of the All-Belarusian people’s meeting offered by politologists. And indeed, what lawmaking work can be done within the only day of the sitting?! It is possible only to listen to the speech of Aliaxandar Lukashenka himself and to demonstrate unanimous support in front of the TV cameras. The picture “the President asking advice of the people” is ensured.
The first All-Belarusian people’s meeting took place October 19, 1996, a month before the famous referendum owing to which Lukashenka reinforced his presidential powers significantly.
The second All-Belarusian people’s meeting was organized May 18, 2001, 4 months before the Presidential election. Then Aliaxandar Lukashenka presented his report “For strong and thriving Belarus” - later on this title grew into the advertising political slogan of his entire electoral campaign. And then the model of the All-Belarusian people’s meeting and its core conception were determined - a report for one five-year plan and a plan for the next. And apparently this model will be applied for the third meeting as well.
