Belarus hockey forward slapped with 2-year drug ban 11:21, 30/06/2005, CBC Sports
The International Ice Hockey Federation has suspended Belarus forward Tsimafei Filin for two years for steroids use.
The 21-year-old Filin was disqualified from this past May`s world hockey championship in Austria when the IIHF revealed his A and B samples showed the steroid norandrosterone was present in his system at 250 times the normal level.
As a result, Filin is banned from all IIHF competitions until May 2007. He can appeal the decision within the next 21 days to the world`s top sports tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.
The IAAF said Filin also tested positive for nandrolone.
Norandrosterone helps athletes increase their strength and muscle mass.
Filin played with Dynamo Minsk in Belarus last season. He had previously played with Polygon in Slovakia and the Ontario Hockey League`s Oshawa Generals.
Filin was tested after the team`s 2-1 loss to Slovakia and played in one game and had no points in the tournament.
In a related matter, the IIHF said it has postponed making a decision on Ukrainian defenceman Oleksander Pobyenostsev, who also tested positive for norandrosterone in Austria.
