Death penalty to be abolished after referendum only
16:38, 30/06/2005

Minister of the Interior Uladzimir Naumau deems the resolution of the death penalty abolition can be adopted only in the course of the all-national dispute. “We have been moving to the abolition of death penalty for a long time. The number of the sentences set is minimum. Two this year,” - U. Naumau said in his interview to Interfax.

- The resolution on the death penalty abolition or on imposing the moratorium should be carried by the all-national referendum, not on a working level, - the Minister emphasized.

Death penalty in Belarus, he proceeded, is implemented only under the Constitution “as an exceptional measure of punishment for the gravest crimes and only in accordance with the court verdict”.

The implementation of death penalty impedes the Republic to join the Council of Europe.
