Former deputy of the “chamber” sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment 11:45, 15/08/2005
The deputy of the so-called “chamber of representatives” of the previous convocation Mikalay Skutau is sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment. On August 12 this verdict was passed by the Supreme Court of Belarus, that examined the case of the former deputy head of the parliamentary commission on industry.
As Radio Svaboda informs, Mikalay Skutau was indicted for a larceny by abusing his power, illegal participation in business activities and bribery. The state accuser demanded to sentence the ex-parliamentary to 12 years of imprisonment.
The verdict of the highest court of the country was restricted to 7 years of the colony of medium security and confiscation of property, and the fact of bribery was found not proved. However, former deputy is to spend less time behind the bars, as his term has been shortened by one year because of the amnesty.
Mr. Skutau was arrested almost simultaneously with two more well-known persons, former chairman of the State Aircraft Committee Fiodar Ivanou and general director of the open joint stock company “Naftan” Kanstantsin Chasnavitski.
