On 4 September the Days of Belarusian Literature started in the town of Kamianiets in Brest region. The organizers of this official measure didn’t invite to it members of the Union of Belarusian Writers that is considered to be “opposition” to the official literary associations.
On September 1 in Darashevichy village (Petrykauski District) a group of armed special police officers under the direction of major S. Kutasau detained a journalist (Anatolij Hatouchyts, chairperson of Hrodna affiliate of BAJ) for 1,5 hours. The journalist was interviewing villagers and taking pictures of the barrier separating the village from the river Prypiat. (This photo-report was for "Narodnaja Vola"). A. Hatouchyts`s SONY dictaphones (digital and cassette) and a "Zenit" camera were confiscated, his car was searched and 4 audio cassettes with music were confiscated too. Nothing has been given back yet.
Activists of Georgian movement “Kmara” Georgy Kandelaki and Luka Tsuladze are coming back to Tbilisy. They were released from Belarusian prison on Friday. They have been illegally imprisoned for almost 10 days. That very day they left for Kiev. During their stay in totalitarian Belarus they were recognized as prisoners of conscience. Georgian ministry of foreign affairs and President Mihail Saakashvili estimated the arrest as political.
The United States is again urging Belarus to cease its repression of independent civil society and to honor the commitments to human rights made in agreements with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The Supreme Court of Belarus finally responded to the complaint of Valiery Lievanieuski, submitted in March 2005 against the sentence, according to which he was found guilty in defamation of president and punished with two years of jail. The Supreme Court decided to leave the sentence unchanged.
In 2003 the authorities liquidated Iakub Kolas Belarusian Humanities Lyceum with Belarusian language of instruction and deprived it of the building in Kirau Street 21. Now this building is passed to Minsk Tsentralny Borough Court. Soon the interior structure of the building will be changed and the roof will be repaired.
