Head of Vaukavysk Branch of UPB Arrested for Three Days

Today Alyaksandr Baradaukin, the head of Vaukavysk branch of the United Civil Party, was arrested for three days in Vaukavysk. The court sentenced him to arrest for participation in an unsanctioned picket. Another UCP activist is to pay a fine which amounts to his half-year pension.

In Belarus BHC Sues Presidential Affairs Administration

Human rights activists went to the Supreme Economic Court and filed a charge against the Department of Humanitarian Activity of the Presidential Affairs Administration, as they had refused to register money assistance which had been transmitted to the account of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee by the International Helsinki Federation.

New Head of OSCE Mission Visited Oppositional Party’s Office

Today Ambassador Oke Peterson, newly appointed head of the OSCE office in Minsk, had a meeting with the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka. As the press-service of the party informs, during the meeting the political situation in Belarus was discussed. The issues of the rigged results at the last parliamentary elections and referendum in Belarus, and abductions of prominent politicians and a journalist were discussed.

Belarusian Delegation in New York: Two Bodyguards, No Interpreters

For the last three days in New York the Second World Conference of parliaments’ speakers is held. The first conference took place in 2000 on the occasion of the UN Millennium Assembly. This year leaders of the parliaments of all countries were invited to the conference, including the speaker of Belarus. The aim of the conference is to acquaint the UN with the role of the parliaments of all countries in the system of multi-lateral relations, and their contribution to the cause of security, democracy, human rights.

Pamfilova Won’t Meet With Lukashenka

Another session of the Russian -Belarusian Human Rights Commission by Russian presidential council has taken place in Moscow. Russian and Belarusian human rights activists recommended the head of the commission Ella Pamfilova to decline invitation to the meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka, and decided to hold the next session in Belarus.

A 600,000 Br Fine to UCP Activist

Today an activist of the United Civil Party Vital Hulyak was fined by Vaukavysk court 600,000 Br. He is punished for participation in an unsanctioned picket during the repeated congress of the Union of Poles in Belarus.

Belarusian TV again Accuses Foreign Diplomats

Recently the Belarusian TV has accused Polish diplomats in smuggling of Glos znad Niemna newspaper through the border and teaching representatives of the Polish minority in Belarus how to organize distemper. “This can lead to deportation of our diplomats from Belarus”, -- writes the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyvorcza.

Radio Free Europe looking for new methods to spread information

Mikola Statkevich Not Allowed Minsk

Wife of the political prisoner Mikola Statkevich, Valyantsina Statkevich, lodged an appeal to the prosecutor’s office of Pershamajski district of Minsk, which prohibited her husband to visit Minsk. Her husband, the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Narodnaya Hramada) Mikola Statkevich, serves the sentence of corrective labour in Baranavichy for organizing street protest after the referendum last year.
