Trial Over Journalist Postponed
12:30, 15/09/2005

A trial over journalist of the “Salidarnasts” newspaper Jan Roman, that has started in Hrodna, was rescheduled for September 20. This decision has been taken by the judge of the Lenin district Natalya Kozel on September 14 because of the absence of witness for the prosecution, a guard of the Machine Tool Units’ plant.

The commander of the security service of Hrodna Machine Tool Units’ plant Uladzmimir Malatkou has lodged a complaint against Jan Roman. According to U.Malatkou, on August 23 at the check passage of the plant Jan Roman distributed unregistered newspaper which contents allegedly “contradict state interests”. It is worth mentioning that in his statement for police U. Malatkou wrote that “reporters of the forbidden newspaper PAHONYA Mikola Markevich and Pavel Mazhejka help Jan Roman to edit the distributed newspaper”.

“Everything written by Malatkou is a lie and slander. He even confused the name of the trade union to which I belong. Thus, I am told to be connected to the trade union REPAM, which was liquidated last year, and not REP, to which I really belong, and which is officially registered. Besides, an “illegal newspaper” is a completely legal newspaper “Salidarnasts”, which has a registration of Information Ministry”, the journalist said to PAHONYA.

As we have informed, Jan Roman is charged with violation of the Article of Administrative Code as acting on behalf of “unregistered organization”. The next court hearing in his case is to start on September 20 at 11 a.m.
