Iryna Krasouskaya: “We are to learn the truth”
17:09, 20/09/2005

“The Belarusian authorities are defending the dictatorship in an increasingly harsh form. The cruelty and atrocity of riot policemen during the protest on September 16 is a presentiment of the inevitable end. Instead of investigating the cases of the disappeared, the authorities are trying to intimidate people who remember about the disappeared and press for investigation of abductions. But a man cannot be deprived of memory, and more and more people ask themselves why these people have disappeared. Sooner or later we are to find out the truth, and the criminals are to stand fair trial. It is obvious that when Lukashenka expresses concern over Milosevic and Hussein, he worries about his own future,” said the leader of the civil initiative “We Remember” Iryna Krasouskaya, commenting the brutal dispersal of the peaceful rally in commemoration of the abducted people in Belarus, that was held on September 16 in Minsk.

Zmitser Bandarenka: “Belarus Turns Into a Completely Fascist State”
15:36, 20/09/2005

“The decree issued by Minister Halavanau means either that the minister has gone mad, or that Belarus is turning into a fully fascist state. Previously, within a year or a year and a half the Justice Ministry has cancelled registration of about 100 non-governmental organizations, which have not stopped their activities, but turned into civil initiatives. Today the authorities demand that these and other civil initiatives to go through the registration process again. But in reality the resolution of Lukashenka’s minister means the following: stop thinking and saying bad of Lukashenka, stop struggling with dictatorship, otherwise all dissenters would be sent to prisons and colonies,” in this way the coordinator of the civil initiative “Chatrer’97” Zmitser Bandarenka commented the resolution adopted by Justice Minister Viktar Halavanau on obligatory registration of coalitions, civil initiatives and movements.

Lukashenka at the un: propaganda and invective
11:43, 20/09/2005, By David Marples, The Jamestown Foundation

Though the domestic situation in Belarus is tightly controlled by the authorities, the administration of President Alexander Lukashenka has been isolated internationally to an increasing extent. It was designated an "outpost of tyranny" by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and the U.S. administration and the European Union have made no secret of their preference for a change of regime. However, the Lukashenka leadership has been presented recently with some propaganda triumphs that may help to perpetuate the image propagated by the Belarusian media of a strong leader of a stable republic, offering new international initiatives.

Acting, but Not on the Orders of the State
11:42, 20/09/2005, By Yuri Zarakhovich, TIME Europe magazine

The easiest way of knowing whether good has triumphed over evil is to examine the freedom of the artist," quips a character in Travesties, one of the oft-staged plays by British playwright Tom Stoppard. Late last month, Stoppard was able to form a view on how that struggle is faring in Belarus. Along with around 70 local spectators packed into a tiny bar in a shabby industrial area of Minsk, the capital, he watched an underground theater performance. The Belarus Free Theater (FT), a group of some 40 playwrights, directors, producers and actors, operates in the repressive regime of President Alexander Lukashenko. Stoppard was there to see FT`s first-ever production, a Russian translation of 4.48 Psychosis, a play by another British playwright, Sarah Kane, about a suicidal young woman. The subject matter is deemed dangerously subversive in the paranoid world of the last Soviet-style dictatorship in Europe, so the FT mounted the play quietly. "It`s not without precedent, this situation," Stoppard told Time. "It`s very interesting that the arts in general, and theater in particular, are treated with such caution by authorities."
