Political Prisoner’s Letters Destroyed In Jail 12:07, 22/09/2005
The prosecutor’s office of Ivatsevichy region sent an answer to appeals of the family of Valery Levanuski, the head of the all-national strike committee of vendors, member of the “Free Belarus” who serves the sentence in the colony for public insult of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The prosecutor of Ivatsevichy region, T.Stasevich, notes that correspondence of prisoners is subject to censorship, and that “letters of prisoners and sent to prisoners, that have a cynical character, aimed at inflicting damage” to state institutions and individual citizens, are destroyed.
Mister Levaneuski complained that a letter to one of his friends from Hrodna had not been delivered. That letter was destroyed, and the prisoner was acquainted with the document about the destruction.
It is also said in the answer that the law does not provide for bringing a camera and Dictaphone by family members to a short meeting with the prisoner. Having a paper and a pen for writing down something is not envisaged as well. Valery Levaneuski asked permission for that by writing a special request to the head of the corrective colony, Radio Svaboda informs. lllll
