Belarusian regime does not want to democratize 14:36, 26/09/2005
Belarus disavows the intention of Ukraine to promote Belarus’ democratization and its relations with the European Union. Belarusian Foreign Minister Syarhei Martynau said about that in his interview to journalists in Kyiv, “Ukrainski Novini” informs.
“Belarus does not need external help”, he said. Later the acting Foreign Minister of Ukraine Borys Tarasyuk confirmed to the journalist that it is a sovereign right of Belarus and in this situation one could speak rather of interrelationship.
“Let’s call it friendly interrelationship,” Mr. Tarasyuk said.
As said by him, during the talks with Mr. Martynau he touched upon the topics of Belarus’ fulfilment of its commitments to the OSCE, and discussed cooperation of the two countries in the framework of international organizations.
“We are to continue cooperation,” Mr. Tarasyuk underlined once again.
As we have informed, on August 18 Alyaksandr Lukashenka told about his intention to reinforce friendly relations with Ukraine after the conflict in the beginning of August, when Ukraine joined the statement of the European Union with the appeal to the Belarusian authorities to respect the rights of national minorities.
Belarus has considered joining this statement by Ukrainian government an unfriendly step, and the Foreign Ministry of Belarus invited Ukrainian Ambassador to Belarus Piotr Shapoval for explanations. The statement of the European Union has been made in connection with the Belarusian-Polish conflict, when the Belarusian authorities had interfered with the activities of the public association “the Union of Poles in Belarus”.
