Today’s Seventh Day of Hunger Strike of Taxi Minibuses’ Owners from Brest 15:36, 26/09/2005
On September 26 co-workers of the hunger strikers are going to submit an appeal to Brest regional executive committee. The appeal contains a call to the authorities to cancel sanctions against the entrepreneurs, including arrest of the minibuses (“marshrootkas”) that are used in the city.
Entrepreneurs Liubou Laurukovich and Liubou Rezanovich started a hunger strike on September 20, protesting against tax inspection that demands to pay to the budget tens of millions of Belarusian rubles additionally from every car for their commercial application, as a so-called “republican fee”. According to Radio Svaboda, in case their demands would be ignored, other owners of minibuses are to join the hunger strike.
The protesters from Brest have imported their cars from abroad much earlier then the decree on republican fee had been issued. And now they are demanded to pay that fee. The hunger strikers maintain that the law cannot have a retroactive force, as it is a general legal principle.
