Narodnaya Volya’s Current Number Published, But Newspaper’s Existence Under Threat :: Charter'97 :: News

On September 28 “Narodnaya Volya” managed to issue a current number. However, issuing of the newspaper is still at risk, the representatives of the editorial office of the newspaper told to the “Belarusian Association of Journalists”. The property of the newspaper is distrained, paper is arrested, and the bank is to transfer 100 mln Belarusian rubles from the account of the newspaper. (The court of Lenin district of Minsk fined the newspaper for moral damages for publishing an article about the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party Syarhei Hajdukevich and his alleged cooperation with the regime of Saddam Hussein).

In the newspaper of September 27, 2005 the address of the founder and editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Narodnaya Volya”, Iosif Syaredzich, to the readers was published. He asked to help in collecting money for the fine. The timeline of actions of the officers of the court, in the result of which the newspaper’s issuing is under threat, is also given in the address.

Initially officers of the court offered the editorial office to satisfy the judgment of the court before August 25, however on the eve of this day an acting chairman of the Minsk city court Turko suspended its implementation.

On September 20 officers of the court started distraining of the newspaper property without another proposition to satisfy a judgment of the court. On September 20 was finished. Alienation of property under execution is prohibited; a big lot of paper is arrested, the operating account of the “Narodnaya Volya” is blocked until the transfer of the compensation sum.
