On Friday the head of one of the closed Belarusian special detachment colonel Uladzimir Tkachenka (Vladimir Tkachenko) died. The name of Tkachenka emerged in newspapers before the presidential elections in 2001 in connection with high-profile abductions. At that time almost all independent mass media received an anonymous letter allegedly written by the KGB officers. They told about a special detachment which was called “death squad” by people.
In the letter published by some newspapers the authors stated that “the idea to create a special unit belonged to Viktar Shejman,” and the formation of the unit was taking place with the direct involvement of former Interior Affairs Minister Yury Sivakou. Some time ago this special unit was headed by a former officer of the directorate General of state guard Mikalay Vasilchanka. His name was mentioned in a famous report by major-general Mikalay Lapatsik, former head of criminal police of the Belarusian Interior Affairs Ministry. It was written in the report that “V.Shejman ordered to Paulichenka to execute former Interior Ministry head Y.Zakharanka. Provision of information on Zakharanka’s whereabouts for Pulichenka’s actions was provided by a unit of M.Vasilchanka, who had been given an order by V.Shejman through his subordinates”. Several years ago Vasilchenka was dismissed, and Tkachenka was appointed the head of the special unit.
However, Uladzimir Tkachenka’s death is called an absurd accident. Last Friday late in the night his car crashed into a pole in Masherau Avenue (Viktors’). As said by doctors, the death was caused by a heart stroke several seconds before the crash…
