Young People of 15 European Countries Protested by Belarusian Embassy in Vilnius
15:38, 01/12/2005

In different countries of Europe actions in support of the student of the Belarusian State Economic University Tatsyana Khoma continue. Tatsyana was expelled from the Belarusian State Economic University for her trip to France, where she was elected a member of the executive council of international student’s organization ESIB - the National Unions of Students in Europe. In Vilnius the protest was held in front of the building of Belarusian Embassy.

The protest was organized by the Lithuanian Union of Students’ Representations, the largest Lithuanian students’ organization, which last month held a several thousand strong rally of students in Vilnius.

Several dozens of students from 15 European countries – Lithuania, Cyprus, the Great Britain, Poland, Ukraine and other countries, including Belarus – have taken part in the protest. They all arrived to Vilnius for the conference of youth leaders.

The students explained that they protest against violations of human rights in Belarus, and that they are indignant at the expulsion from the university of an active student, who takes part in international students’ movement. The young people were holding in their hands a picture of a brick wall, as a symbol of a state wall, and slogans in different languages with the words “Freedom of travel!” and a white-red-white flag.
The president of the Union of Students’ Representations Vyacheslav Palkiavicus told to the Radio Svaboda that they are going to ask the Education and Science Minister of Lithuania to address the Rector of the BSEU, like his colleague from Sweden, and called upon him not to expel the student for participation in the international students’ meeting.

Lithuanian and international mass media reporters, including “NewYork Times” and “Reuters” representatives, were present at the picket.
