U.S. - EU Joint Statement on Recent Vandalism at Kurapaty 11:27, 06/12/2005
The United States of America and the European Union deplore the recent willful damage to the Kurapaty memorial complex. Unknown vandals carved a swastika onto a
religious icon, knocked over or damaged at least a dozen crosses, and once again defaced the bench President Clinton dedicated in 1994. These crosses and the bench
were placed in commemoration of the tens of thousands of innocent Belarusian victims of NKVD terror who were murdered at Kurapaty. Vandalizing these memorials
dishonors the memory of those victims, and disrespects the Belarusian people as a whole.
