Milinkevich Had Talks with French Foreign Minister 11:08, 10/01/2006
Situation in Belarus was the topic of talks between the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Philippe Douste-Blazy and the leader of Belarusian democratic forces, Alyaksandar Milinkevich, who was on a one-day visit to Paris on January 9.
According to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at this meeting the minister and his visitor discussed human rights and political freedoms in Belarus where there had been a net deterioration, and in particular an increasing crackdown on the opposition press in the run-up to the elections.
“The visit afforded an opportunity to demonstrate France’s support for democracy and human rights in that country,” reads the ministry’s statement.
The one-day official visit of the leader of Belarusian democratic forces, Alyaksandar Milinkevich started on January 9. The visit of A. Milinkevich has taken place on invitation of French government.
Except talks with the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Philippe Douste-Blazy, Milinkevich met a number of prominent French politicians.
The visit of A. Milinkevich to France was covered by all influential French media. Interviews to the influential media “Le Monde”, “Le Figaro”, “Liberation” were on the program of the visit of the Belarusian democratic forces’ leader.
This visit to Paris was the sixth official international visit of Alyaksandr Milinkevich as a candidate of the united democratic forces for presidency.
