Court Refused to Change Measure of Restraint For Son of Journalist Veranika Charkasava

On January 10 the court of the Pershamajski district of Minsk dismiss a complaint of Uladzimir Myaleshka, who had asked to change a measure of restraint for his grandson Anton Filimonau, a son of Veranika Charkasava, a journalist murdered in October 2004. (Uladzimir Meleshka is a legal representative of the 16-year-old teenager). As said by Anton’s grandmother, Dyiana Charkasava, they are to take an appeal from this court decision in a higher court.

Anton Filimonau is under arrest in a remand prison in Valadarski Street in Minsk. He was detained on December 27 by policemen of Pershamajski district on suspicion of counterfeit Belarusian money manufacture. Several pieces of money 5,000 and 10,000 BYR were found at his place and in the apartments of four his friends. A criminal action has been brought up against him on charges relating Article 221 of the Criminal Code of Belarus. All the five of them have spent three days in a remand prison, however on December 30 all of them except Anton were released. Only Filimonau was put under this measure of restraint, arrest.

On January 6 Dyiana Charkasava and Uladzimir Myaleshka held a press conference in Minsk. They stated that according to their information a teenager is compelled to sign confession of guilt in his mother’s murder.
