Belarusian Journalists Ask to Change Measure of Restraint For Veranika Charkasava’s Son 11:32, 01/02/2006
Several dozens of Belarusian journalists have signed an address to the prosecutor of Minsk Mikalay Kulik. They ask to change the measure of restraint for the son of their colleague Veranika Charkasava, Anton Filimonau, and to release him from custody. Collection of signatures was initiated by a wife of Zmitser Zavadski, ORT cameraman disappeared in 2000, Svyatlana Zavadsakaya, a member of the public association “Belarusian Association of Journalists”. It is supposed that the address is to be sent to Mr Kulik on February 1.
“As doctors say, A.D. Filimonau has a number of serious diseases: falling of kidney, cardiopathy, chronic tonsillitis,” the address reads. “In the conditions of the pre-trial detention center these diseases can aggravate, that would make an irreversible effect on his frail health”.
The authors of the address believe that detention in the pre-trial detention center can also cause negative consequences for his psychological and emotional development of the teenager. Journalists attract attention to the fact that according to the Art. 117 of the Criminal Code the measure of restraint could be applied when a suspect or accused when they could escape.
A journalist Veranika Charkasava was brutally murdered in November 2004. Her murderers were not found.
