Vitaliy Klichko: «I vote for Freedom and Democracy in Belarus!»
12:06, 17/02/2006

February 16, Leader of the Ukrainian Civil Block “PORA-PRP”, world champion in boxing Vitaliy Klichko made a statement on solidarity with the Belarusian democratic forces and protested against mass detentions of the Belarusian youth before the Presidential election. “Today, on February 16, 2006, I add my voice to the voices of hundreds and thousands of people all over the world who call for freedom and democracy in your country, in brotherly Belarus”, - this is said in Vitaliy Klichko’s statement which was sent to the Charter 97 press-center. “I also call upon the Belarusian state power to halt mass detentions of the young members of opposition movements, Belarusian residents who have the right for their own point of view, right for their own choice. Such measures discredit the power, since an unfair victory costs little”, - V.Klichko states. Here goes the entire statement:

Dear friends,

Today, on February 16, 2006, I add my voice to the voices of hundreds and thousands of people all over the world who call for freedom and democracy in your country, in brotherly Belarus.

On the Day of Belarusian Solidarity here, in Ukraine, we commemorate numerous citizens of your country who were repressed by the ruling regime - all those people have made a simple civil feat in the name of their Motherland, which they wanted to see different - new, flourishing and free.

I also call upon the Belarusian state power to halt mass detentions of the young members of opposition movements, Belarusian residents who have the right for their own point of view, right for their own choice. Such measures discredit the power, since an unfair victory costs little.

As the leader of the political force - Civil Block “PORA-PRP”, whose principals are free citizen, open and just civil society and thriving economy, I wish you, my dear siabry (Bel. “friends”), strong belief in your strength, I wish all freedom-loving citizens to unite in their aspiration to changes - and the victory will come, Belarus will be free, open and thriving.

Today many Ukrainian families will light candles of memory and solidarity with you, dear siabry. Today a candle will be lit in my house as well.

Sincerely,

Vitaliy Klichko,
Leader of Civil Block “PORA-PRP”

Kiev, February 16, 2006
