Latvian Parliament Urges World Community to Support Belarusian Oppositionists 17:42, 22/02/2006
The external policy commission of Latvian parliament condemns yesterday’s detentions of civil society activists in Minsk and calls upon the world community to take a strong stand on this issue. “As a democratic state, Latvia cannot take a fact of mass arrests of oppositionists, as it openly runs counter to the human rights principles,” the statement of the commission reads.
“Critically assessing the actions of the Belarusian government, which ignores demands of the PA NATO and PACE to let its representatives to participate in election observation, the members of the commission urge the authorities of Belarus to change their decision, and express readiness to take part in observation in Belarus,” stated Latvian parliamentarians.
The commission also urges governments and parliaments of other democratic countries, as well as different international organizations, to take a more active part in presidential elections observation in Belarus, to minimize possible rigging of elections results, and to co-ordinate concrete steps for support of the democratic forces in Belarus.
