Hrodna Region Dwellers Defend Milinkevich’s Team Members 18:08, 01/03/2006
In Hrodna region agitation campaign for democratic candidate for presidency, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, is sweep spread in Hrodna, Vaukavysk, Smarhon, Ashmyany, Astravets, Navahradak, Svislach, Karelichy, Dzyatlava, Lida, Slonim, other cities and towns. The Charter’97 press center was told about that by the head of Hrodna campaign headquarters leader, Anatol Khatsko. Policemen are trying to hinder campaign pickets, however, local dwellers started to defend activists of the single candidate’s team.
In the towns and cities of Hrodna region booklets with information about Alyaksandr Milinkevich and the newspaper “Narodnaya Volya” are distributed. Stands with portraits of the single candidate are put up, and activists are raising public awareness.
Policemen are checking documents of the activists for several times a day. Sometimes they arrest them and take to police departments. However, as A. Khatsko said, later activists are released, as policemen have no legal grounds for hindering the campaign.
Nevertheless, today in Hrodna a deputy head of Hrodna city campaign headquarters of the democratic candidate, Vadzim Saranchukou, was detained by his own house. “According to the typical scheme, Vadzim was accused of public order violation. Today evening he is to stand trial, and can be arrested for 15 days. We do not doubt that it is linked exclusively with his active work in the headquarters of Alyaksandr Milinkevich,” Anatol Khatsko said.
Policemen are trying to interfere with campaign pickets, but local dwellers started to defend activists of the single candidate’s team.
“Policemen are checking documents of our activists for several times a day. They contact higher officers, and when a colonel or major tells them to release activists, they leave them alone. They are simply wasting our time. People are energetically reacting to the close attention of policemen to informational pickets. As a rule, people are defending our activists actively, and demand to let us be and give us a chance to go on with our work. Policemen have to withdraw,” told the head of Homel regional campaign headquarters to the Charter’97 press center.
