“Pora” picketed Belarusian Embassy in Kiev 12:08, 01/03/2006
February 28, activists of the youth wing of the Ukrainian civil party “Pora” held a piquet by the Belarusian Embassy in Kiev. According to the “Pora” press-service, more than 30 people came to the Embassy carrying “yellow flags of the party and historical white-red-white flags of Belarus”, “protesting against the methods that the official power of Belarus uses to fight its competitors before the Presidential election”.
“Shouting “Long Live Belarus!” they formed a kind of a “bridge of Freedom” between Ukraine and Belarus to pass the Ukrainian revolutionary impulse of 2004 to the neighbouring country. The eloquent poster with the words “Ukraine 2004, Belarus 2006” hinted that as well”, - the party’s press-service repots.
On that very day the pre-election faction “Pora-PRP” made a statement where “explicit protest against the actions of the Belarusian power targeted at suffocation of freedom and democratic movement in the country” was expressed.
“We uphold our Belarusian friends and colleagues. We know many of them personally. And we would like to draw attention of the Ukrainian Foreign Office to the rough violations of human rights that occur in Belarus. In 2004, Ukraine claimed its democratic leadership in the region, and facing the present situation in Belarus, it is high time to demonstrate our devotion to the values of democracy and human rights”, - the statement proclaims.
“Pora-PRP” demanded “immediate and specific reaction to human rights violations in Belarus” from the Ukrainian Foreign Office and state authorities. The faction suggests “granting political shelter in Ukraine for the activists who were persecuted in Belarus”
