Kozulin`s campaign manager requests Supreme Court to remove Lukashenko from ballot over leave controversy 17:32, 09/03/2006
Mecheslav Grib, the campaign manager of presidential candidate Aleksandr Kozulin, has requested the Supreme Court to remove Aleksandr Lukashenko from the ballot.
In his petition to the Court, Mr. Grib says that he asked the central election commission to annul its decision to grant registration to Mr. Lukashenko in accordance with Part 1 of the Electoral Code`s Article 77.
The above-mentioned article requires all presidential candidates to suspend work for presidential elections, except for the incumbent running for a second term. It says nothing about a third term.
According to Mr. Grib, the central election commission replied that Mr. Lukashenko is not required to take a leave as the exemption applies to the incumbent running for any new term.
"In its recommendations, the central election commission makes an attempt at clarifying Part 1 of the Belarusian Electoral Code`s Article 77, referring to the new edition of Part 1 of the constitution`s Article 81 as the legal basis for the clarification. The central election commission appears to have vested itself with the right to interpret articles of the Belarusian constitution, the right that even the president does not have," the politician says in his petition to the Supreme Court.
