KGB Chairman Intimidates March 19 Protest Participants by Death Penalty 13:21, 16/03/2006
A press conference of the KGB chairman Stsyapan Sukharenka (Stepan Sukhorenko) and Prosecutor General Pyotr Miklashevich and Interior Minister Uladzimir Navumau (Vladimir Naumov) has taken place in the national press center. The press conference was dedicated to the presidential elections on March 19.
The security service head Stsyapan Sukharenka told that yesterday, on March 15, the KGB has initiated a criminal action on the fact of preparation to a series of terrorist attacks in Minsk on March 19.
The KGB head also showed video footage and confessions of witnesses, which to his mind confirm organizing attacks. Most of the people in the film were Georgian citizens, including representatives of Georgian state institutions. A video film of Anatol Lyabedzka’s meeting with one of Georgian representatives has been demonstrated as well.
To the question of the Radio Svaboda correspondent, Stsyapan Sukharenka specified that the role of Anatol Lyabedzka is being single out in the criminal action. Accusations can be presented to him.
Sukharenka also warned that all active participants of the events on March 19 can face terrorism charges.
Under the country’s Penal Code, acts of terrorism are punishable by prison terms of 25 years, or by the death penalty.
