MIKHAIL MARYNICH TO GO AT LARGE 18:42, 12/04/2006

Today a visiting session of the court has taken place in Minsk corrective labour colony UZH 15/1. A decision about early release of the political prisoner, former Minister of Foreign Economic ties and Extraordinary Ambassador Mikhail Marynich was passed by the session of the court. The administration of the colony, in which the political prisoner serves the sentence, has signed documents about his early release. As we have informed, Mikhail Marynich had a stroke in the colony, and at the moment he is a disabled person of the second category.

As the Charter’97 press center has found out, the rector of the Belarusian State Economic University Uladzimir Shymau (Vladimir Shimov) goes to Italy today. It is not known exactly what is the aim of his trip. However it is an outrageous fact that the person personally responsible for expelling students for political reasons, Tatsyana Khoma among them. Tatsyana Khoma was expelled from the university because of a three-day visit to France to participate at the conference of the largest student organization in Europe.

On Wednesday the court of Tsentralny district of Minsk has dismissed a complaint of the lawyers of the former candidate for presidency in Belarus, former rector of the Belarusian State University Alyaksandr Kazulin on the illegal character of his detention. “The detention has been found legal, and the complaint dismissed,” they were told in the court.

In Vorsha a criminal action has been brought up allegedly for libelling Alexander Lukashenka. The accused is an opposition activist Mikalay Rozumau. On March 24 during the meeting of Alyaksandr Milinkevich with voters he stated that Alyaksandr Lukashenka is implicated in assassinations of the former Internal Affairs Minister Yury Zakharanka and former Vice Prime Minister Viktar Hanchar.

The PACE Political Affairs Committee has prepared a draft resolution for today’s debate on Belarus. All the members of the committee voted for the resolution with one vote against and one abstained: in this way Russian deputies Konstantin Kosachev and Viktor Kolesnikov, members of the PACE Political Affairs Committee, have expressed their attitude towards the fraudulent elections in Belarus. The European MPs believe that the results of the vote at tomorrow’s debate would be the same.

A well-known human rights watchdog, a deputy chairman of the United Civil party Ludmila Hraznova has been summoned to the prosecutor’s office of Savetsky district of Minsk. Alyaksandr Agafonau, an investigator, asked the human rights watchdog to provide explanations concerning her statement published on the site Charter’97. 
Orsha: Criminal Case for Defamation of Lukashenka Borough against Mikalai Razumau 11:44, 12/04/2006

On 24 March, during the meeting of Aliaksandr Milinkevich with the electorate, Mikalai Razumau stated Lukashenka had relation to the murders of Viktar Hanchar and Iury Zakharanka. It was qualified as violation of part 2 of article 367 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The criminal case against Mikalai Razumau was brought by the senior investigator Ie.Filipovich. Mr Razumau was taken to Minsk for psychiatric expertise. We should remind that Mikalai Razumau is one of the leaders of Orsha strike committee who in the beginning of the 1990-ies organized mass protests of workers, including blockade of the railway. 
Minsk: Siarhei Kastylenka, Activist of Kazulin’s Headquarters, Sentenced to 5 Days of Jail 11:43, 12/04/2006

The activist of the electoral headquarters of the candidate to the presidential position Aliaksandr Kazulin, was sentenced to 5 days of imprisonment. He was judged in absence. Mr Kastylenka was found guilty of violation of public order near Minsk Kastrychnitski Borough Board of Internal Affairs. That day there gathered members of Kazulin’s headquarters after Mr Kazulin was detained for the attempt to register as a delegate to the All-Belarusian National Assembly.

U.Kukar, chair of the organizational and staff department of Svetlahorsk District Executive Committee, composed the reports with the statement that Viktar Akhramchuk, Natallia Bordak and Sviatlana Mikhalchanka used portable stands (in fact, these were small boards with Milinkevich’s portraits). In these reports he also stated it was a violation of the decision of Svetlahorsk DEC to place agitation materials in the places that weren’t meant for it. The trial lasted for several days. Vice-chair of Svetlahorsk District Board of Internal Affairs Piatro Zykun tried to prove the agitators ‘carried a stand that was higher than 1,6 meters and organized pickets’. When the defenders brought to the trial one of the boards with the portraits, Mr Zykun said that ‘it used to have wooden foots, but they sawed them off’.

The European Union told Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko on Monday that he was unwelcome in the 25-nation bloc after his re-election last month in a vote observers said was rigged. It also imposed a visa ban on 30 other top officials in Belarus seen as having a hand in the government`s election campaign crackdown on the opposition and its supporters.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Tuesday the European Union will rely on Russia to pressure Belarus to end its crackdown on the political opposition and its supporters. "We hope that Russia will use its considerable influence to persuade Belarus to take measures which will allow that country to re-enter the European family of democracies," Barroso told the Council of Europe`s Parliamentary Assembly, a gathering of several hundred parliamentarians from the council`s 46 member states.

A German magazine “Focus” in the issue of April 10, 2006 touched upon the topic of physical health of the Belarusian dictator Alyaksandr Lukashenka. “Protests against his re-election cost much to Alyaksandr Lukashenka. It is believed that the head of the state, who shunned public after elections and postponed the date of swearing-in ceremony, had an insult to the brain. Besides, he is rumoured to have pancreatic tumor. Another fact was even more destructive for him. Russia announced its intention to rise gas prices for the brotherly nation in several times,” the German magazine writes.
