Banknotes With Words “Fed Up With Him!” In Minsk 19:04, 18/04/2006

In Minsk banknotes with words “For Freedom!”, “Together”, “Do not believe Belarusian TV”, “Fed up with him!” and others emerged. People who get such money in shops, wonder why they receive banknotes with writings. Cashiers say that they are given such money by clients. 
Youth Activists Detained in Minsk 19:00, 18/04/2006

On April 18 officers of law-enforcing agencies detainmed youth activists Natallya Ushko and Alena Kopach. Policeman Skulamets was very rude, and detained them with use of force. In the police unit in the metro station administrative reports have been drawn up against Natallya Ushko and Alena Kopach for violation of the Presidential Decree number 31 item 1.6 (violation of the rules of living environment) for pasting stickers “Fed up with him!”.

Does Russia really belong in the Group of Eight -- the assembly of the world`s leading industrialized democracies? As things stand today, it meets only one criterion for membership: the size of its economy. So far as political rights are concerned, Russia ranks 168th out of 192 countries, according to Freedom House. In terms of corruption, the organization Transparency International ranks Russia 126th out of 159 countries. The World Economic Forum calculates that when it comes to favoritism in governmental decisions, Russia rates 85th of 108 countries, in protection of property rights 88th of 108 and in independence of the judicial system 84th out of 102. 
Pickets In Support of Kazulin Banned In Babrujsk 17:26, 18/04/2006

The authorities in Babrujsk haven’t allowed representatives of the former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin headquarters to hold pickets in his support. As the correspondent of the internet source belngo.info was informed by an aide of the politician, Taisa Kabanchuk, the city executive committee banned the picket on a formal reason: allegedly, the appeal for holding pickets should be submitted two weeks before. According to this logic, the application for holding pickets in support of Kazulin should have been submitted before he was detained.

A firs session of the International Public Court Over Alyaksandr Lukashenka is to take place in September, told the Chairman of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka to journalists on Tuesday. “It is to take place either in Vilnius, or in Kyiv, or in Warsaw, or in Moscow, or in Minsk. It is to be discussed yet,” Lyabedzka said. The idea of the Belarusian opposition has been supported by the Lithuanian president Valdas Adamkus.

The Amnesty International Student Groups of Amsterdam have held a held a big campaign to draw peoples attention to the Belarusian politicians disappeared in 1999 and 2000. On April 16, on the Day of Solidarity with Belarus, human rights activists were in the streets of Amsterdam with portraits of Yury Zakharanka, Viktar Hanchar, Anatol Krasouski and Dzmitry Zavadski.

As the BelaPAN agency has informed by the coordinator of the civil committee for defense of the repressed, Inna Kulej, Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University hold the leading position in the number of students expelled for politically motivated reasons. At the moment the number of students expelled from different universities for their political activities is 15.

Oppositionist Arrested For Meeting Before It Taken Place 13:37, 18/04/2006

An activist of the democratic movement, the head of Homel regional headquarters of Milinkevich’s campaign Uladzimir Katsora was detained in Homel today in the night. Mr Katsora was placed to a pre-trial detention center, as his lawyer Pyotr Barysau said to the Radio Svaboda. He is charged with organizing an unsanctioned meeting. Uladzimir Katsora in fact had submitted an appeal for holding a meeting to Homel city executive committee. The meeting would have been timed to the 20th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear power station accident. However, the meeting was to take place on March 25. The leader of democratic forces of Belarus Alyaksandr Milinkevich is going to take part in the meeting.

On Monday Halina Siuchyk, a mother of Vyachaslau Siuchykm an opposition activist, phones reporters and told that people in black leather jackets filled the entrance of her block of flats. They were standing on the ladder and by the window at the staircase landing. In several minutes light in the apartment went off.

An opposition activist Tsimafei Dranchuk, who is in the remand prison of the KGB had a meeting with his wife. Volha Antsypovich believes that she was allowed to meet her husband because their child was born one of these days, as relatives of other political prisoners are not allowed to have meetings.

During the electoral campaign about ten members of Young Front were expelled from educational establishments for political reasons. Criminal cases were brought against 19 persons. The organization’s members stated they would continue street actions despite the persecution.

“I heard the guy standing in front of me saying: “Well, guys! Remember, truth is with us…” At that moment people started to pray out loud. Some girls were still naively shouting our slogan “Police are with the people!”. They were shouting through tears. Many people cried, talked to their friends or parents on the phone. Some were looking for their belongings in the dark…”, -- Mikhas Chyzhyk, participant of the action, talks about the events of that night. He, as well as about 500 other young people, was arrested that night in the tent camp in the center of Minsk. Belarus has not seen such numbers of detained rally participants. Jails did not have enough room for the detained. The judicial conveyer needed only a couple of minutes to decide on their fate. Aksana Rudovich was detained that night as well. 
Babruisk and Brest: Authorities Don’t Authorize Pickets in Support of Aliaksandr Kazulin 10:44, 18/04/2006

In Babruisk the authorities rejected the request for the authorization of a picket in support of the former candidate to presidency Aliaksandr Kazulin for a formal reason - because it was to have been filed two weeks before the date of the picket. Kazulin’s proxy Taisia Kabanchuk said that on 17 April one more application for pickets will be submitted to Babruisk Executive Committee.

According to readers of news@hrodna.by the pro-governmental state organization Belarusian National Youth Union (BRSM) now has its own combatant forces. It includes at least two clubs - the patriotic club Valour, Honor, Courage and the club of law and order protection Panther.

Right before the Easter “Nasha Niva” got a letter from Minsk city executive committee. It has it: “the allocation of “Nasha Niva” in Minsk is not appropriate”. The motivation is as follows: “… it has been ascertained … that the 22th of March the editor-in-chief of “Nasha Niva” was put under administrative arrest for 10 days”.
