Authorities, opposition groups hold Chernobyl anniversary events in Vitebsk
12:29, 28/04/2006

Authorities and opposition groups held separate events in Vitebsk on April 26 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

The city authorities staged a rally and a concert on Vitebsk`s 1000 Anniversary Square. Addressing the gathering, Pavel Losich, deputy chairman of the Vitebsk City Executive Committee, said the region gave shelter to more than 8,000 Chernobyl evacuees.

About 20 activists of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party "Hramada" and other opposition parties floated a wreath down the River Western Dvina as a tribute to "Chernobyl`s atomic soldiers." The opposition supporters also held a contest of children`s drawings on Vitebsk`s 1000th Anniversary Square later in the evening.
