Mikita Sasim Sentenced to 3 Months of Arrest 11:02, 12/05/2006
Today a youth leader Mikita Sasim has been sentenced to 3 months of arrest by the court of Baranavichy district and the town of Baranavichy. Mikita has been charged with draft evasion, though last autumn he had been granted a deferral because of a traumatic brain injury received during disband of the peaceful protest rally on September 16, 2005. The youth leader had spent two months in the pre-trial detention center of Baranavichy before the trial, so he has to spend one more month in prison.
Human rights activists consider Mikita Sasim’s arrest to be politically motivated and related to his political activities.
Human rights organization Amnesty International has called upon human rights watchdogs all over the world and common citizens to take part in the campaign in support of the Belarusian youth leader. “Amnesty International” has stated that Mikita Sasim is to be recognized a prisoner of conscience.
